Vehicle: 2007 Volkswagen Eos (1F7) L4-2.0L Turbo (BPY)

Problem: This VW came to the shop with the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light) on and the customer’s concerns were that the vehicle had no power and no throttle response. The vehicle would go into limp-in mode anytime there was a load on the engine.

Details: The technician retrieved DTC 005445 (P1545) – Throttle Valve Controller Malfunction. With a scan tool, the technician checked the Accelerator Pedal Position (APP1 and APP2) sensors and the Throttle Position (TP1 and TP2) sensor data to be sure there were no glitches and that they all followed each other properly. With the key “On Engine Off” and while pressing the accelerator pedal through its full sweep, all of the sensors worked normally.

Since all of the throttle position sensors were operating normally and the problem only occurred with the engine running under a load, the Tech-Assist Consultant advised the technician to check the camshaft (CMP) and crankshaft (CKP) sensors with a scope, even though there were no codes for those sensors.

Confirmed Repair: The technician connected a scope and noticed that the CKP pattern had only 2 volts of amplitude at idle when it should have had 7-8 volts. He replaced the CKP sensor, cleared the codes and test drove the vehicle. The throttle valve controller code did not come back and the drivability problem was fixed.
